Del Mar Where the Surf Meets the Turf! Del Mar is Spanish for “by the sea”, and this upscale city is considered quite prestigious. Each summer, fans come to the racetrack to wager on their favorite horses during the annual Del Mar Thoroughbred Club racing season which runs mid-July – early-September. This long-standing tradition dates back to 1934 when Bing Crosby greeted the first guests, and Seabiscuit won by a nose in the infamous race in 1938
