The La Jolla Bike & Kayak location:
The guides were relatively pleasant, engaging story tellers, but not particularly attentive once we were in the water. There were 5 people (include two of our group) who had never kayaked before and four of these people were age 50+. The real challenge arose, not with kayaking, but with getting in and out of the kayak while in deep water. There were no instructions or directions provided for getting into the water, beyond directing us to get away from the boats after getting into the water. More importantly there was no direction regarding how to reenter the boats, and three of us struggled significantly. Only after a participant called to the guide to assist the three of us did he enter the water and give any direction and assistance. All three of us ultimately succeeded but only with great difficulty and some bruising due to initial unsuccessful attempts. Interestingly the two teenage members of our group independently noted the lack of instruction regarding safety and process after we returned to the hotel.
When we return we will certainly go kayaking and snorkeling again, but as separate activities and likely with a different company.
I was nervous heading out as the surf was a little heavy, but the guys on the shore made sure we got out safely. Once we were past the breakers, it was a breeze!
On the way back in we ended up tipping (despite the guide who swam out to help us in), but it was actually enjoyable and refreshing after sitting in the sun for a while.
We couldn't kayak the caves because of the water conditions, so they gave us vouchers to go to the Cave Store. I really appreciate that extra detail; they make sure their customers are taken care of.
All in all, I'm now wondering why it took me so long to finally do this tour. I would go out with this company again tomorrow!
Sam and Brian both made the trip great. Brian hung back with us and kept checking up on me. Overall I recommend—but maybe take some Dramamine or a sea sickness bracelet or something!
Our guides Abby and Jack were great. I think we missed skipped going through some of the caves though. Overall really enjoyed it and would do it again.
Once we got to the beach and then the water the guides were great ..... funny, friendly knowledgeable and very helpful. We had the opportunity to see a dolphin swimming very closed to us.
For the tour itself.... i don't know, due to the time of the day, the wind had picked up and we were unable to get close to the caves. Only one cave is actually accessible for the Kayak... we were pulled in by Eliot; the water was amazingly clear, a few sea lions and we headed out after a few minutes.
The area is crowded with other stores tours, we had to wait a couple of minutes until we we able to proceed.
Once we were back at the beach, we were pulled in by a staff member closer to shore, we just went to the store, returned the vest and helmet.
The showers were not working and it was very disappointing because we had to travel over two hours coming back home, and it was uncomfortable with the salty water.
Overall I really like it, it was a nice experience.

This tour was amazing! Taught us a lot about La Jolla, ocean life and California. Snorkeling was breathtaking!

Coronado Location:
I’ve rented from this place before, years ago, and had a great experience, with salespeople who knew bikes and knew the island. This time I had teenagers who couldn’t answer my questions, didn’t have any maps, and gave me a bike that I wouldn’t let my kid ride, even for free. Won’t be back.
Just about the worst customer service. They weren't able to make their session... how do they go about a refund or a rescheduling without speaking to the same person who didn't want to be at work?
