William Heath Davis House
Thing To Do #74
The William Heath Davis House is the oldest house in San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter, dating back to 1850. When William Heath Davis was trying to start his “New Town” by San Diego Bay, there was a shortage of lumber in the area so he had to use pre-fabricated houses that were delivered to San Diego by ship. The house was originally placed at the corner of State and Market Street. In 1970, the city of San Diego purchased it ad in 1984 moved the house to its current location as the restoration bean to transform this old residence into a museum.
Today, each room represents a different period in the house’s history, from its use as a pre-Civil War military officer’s barracks to that of a makeshift hospital. Since the restoration began, the curators have worked tirelessly to restore the house to its current state as a museum for all to appreciate and enjoy. Wander through this historic house on your own, or choose a tour – Gaslamp Walking Tour on Saturday or the Ghost Tour on the second Friday of each month!
