The history of President’s Day dates back to February 22, 1732, the birth of our founding father, George Washington, who is credited for leading us to victory in the American Revolution. Though his birthday became a holiday in the last year of his presidency, it wasn’t observed until 100 years after his birth. Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President who guided our country through the Civil War, was born February 12, 1809, and his birthday celebration began a year after he was assassinated. In 1968 legislation was passed placing federal holidays on Mondays, and in 1971 these two holidays were combined into Presidents’ Day. The third Monday in February each year now pays tribute to both former presidents. Communities across the country observe the day with historical celebrations honoring veterans and purple heart recipients with flag-waving parades, picnics and a sense of patriotism and pride in our country.
Since presidents Day is a Federal Holiday, most schools and government offices will be closed. If you have the day off, or are taking it off to spend with your family, here are some fun things to do!
