Picturesque Point Loma

Point Loma is a seaside community just South of Ocean Beach in San Diego. The word “loma” is Spanish for “hills,” a fitting name for this hilly peninsula. Point Loma is one of the two peninsulas that encompass the San Diego Bay—the other peninsula is Coronado. The town’s extensive coastline allows for ample water sports and activities. In fact, Point Loma is such a seafaring community that its best known landmark is a lighthouse! Things to do in this charming neighborhood include sailing, deep-sea fishing, exploring the Cabrillo National Monument, and taking in the remarkable rock formations of Sunset Cliffs.

History

Often referred to as “where California began,” Point Loma was the landing place of the first European expedition that came to California in 1542. The expedition was led by the Portuguese navigator Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, after which the present-day Cabrillo National Monument is named. When the Europeans landed, the area was uninhabited due to a lack of freshwater in the area. Since then, development of Point Loma has boomed, and today the neighborhood has a population of approximately 50,000.
