HAIRSPRAY AT THE MOONLIGHT AMPHITHEATRE, VISTA
I have never been a huge fan of musical theater – so I rarely take the opportunity to see a show.
Growing up in New York City, with parents who appreciated the performing arts, I had many opportunities to attend Broadway productions – Camelot, West Side Story, Hello Dolly, Rent, and others. I even had a chance to perform in the orchestra pit for an 8th grade production of Oklahoma – I was forgettable, so was the production.
In August, I got invited to a production of Hairspray at a special venue in north San Diego county – the Moonlight Amphitheatre in Vista. I had been there a few years earlier (saw Carousel) and had positive memories.
Frankly, I was more interested in going out with friends, having a picnic in lawn-area seating, having a generous share of red wine, and watching a show for which I had somewhat limited expectations of (remember – I’m not a fan…).
We really enjoyed the picnic – the show vastly exceeded my expectations. The production was first class, the cast was extraordinary. I especially enjoyed the work of Randall Hickman who played the mother of the main character, Tracy. But, I’m not trying so much to review the details of the production (good as it was).
I am driven to rave about the Moonlight Ampitheatre itself! This is a north county jewel that is in its 31st summer season. If YOU are a fan of musical theater, this is a must opportunity for a fantastic summer evening experience.
There’s still more to come this summer season – The Marvelous Wonderettes (September 14 – October 1) and Big (October 7 – 15th). If they are anything like Hairspray, get the tickets. www.moonlightstage.com or (760) 724-2110.
Oh, by the way, I’m a fan now!
