Go On A Grunion Run!

p-grunionWhat’s a grunion? These little fellas, (Leuresthes tenuis) are members of the New World silversides family, Atheriniopsidae, along with the jacksmelt and topsmelt.  Turns out, they “run” or flop up on the beach during the spring and summer for four consecutive nights following a new or full moon.  During high tide the grunion swim (run) and/or grunt their way as far as they can up on to the sand and then commence to having some intimate fun, and then spawn (lay their eggs).  These occurrences normally happen somewhere between Point Conception California to Point Abreojos, Baja California.

During the open season a fishing license is required for persons 16 years and older to capture grunion. Grunion may be taken by sport fishers using their hands only. No holes may be dug in the beach to entrap them. There is no limit, but take only what you can use. It is unlawful to waste fish.

Some of the best runs occur at our local beaches in Del Mar, La Jolla, Mission Beach or in front of the Hotel Del Coronado.
