Lowlands: Visit Torrey Pines State Reserve or Cabrillo National Monument. Rocky shores: Sunset Cliff Boulevard or La Jolla along Coast Boulevard and Ellen Browning Scripps park. Ocean, bay, shore and lagoon: San Luis Rey River Mouth, Shelter and Harbor Island and Glorietta Bay in Coronado. Fresh water ponds, lakes, and marshes: Lake Hodges and Lake Morena County Park. Foothill shrub lands: Silverlake Wildlife Sanctuary, Old Mission Dam and Wilderness Gardens County park. Mountain areas: Hot Springs Mountain and Palomar Mountain State Park. Desert Areas: Anza Borrego Desert State Highway Park and Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge.
The San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve is a haven for more than 295 species of birds and over 300 species of plants. I-5 to Lomas Santa Fe Drive. Go west less than one mile to Rios Avenue. Turn right, end at the end of Rios.
