Go Apple Picking

The historic town of Julian dates back to the gold rush days. About an hour from San Diego, it preserves country traditions like old-time melodramas and shoot-outs; but its apple orchards have put Julian on the map.

The annual festival, Apple Days, began in October 1909. Originally a one day event, it is now a full blown two-month celebration with daily activities, attracting upwards of 45,000 people through November 15. The Festival is held October 1st and 2nd at the Menghini Winery.  A special weekend of fun, with games, merchandise, entertainment and of course, apple pie baking and eating competitions.

Today most apples are still hand picked and there are over 7,000 varieties worldwide. Given the fruit’s popularity, continuing success and growth is inevitable for Julian’s apple community. Their sweet, fresh flavor lures thousands to the mountains each fall, when visitors will find fruit stands overflowing with crisp fruit, homemade cider and other delicacies.
