History

Originally only seasonally occupied by the Kumeyaay people, Julian’s earliest days were very quiet. That quickly changed in 1869, when former slave Fred Coleman was passing through and noticed something shimmering in the water. Almost overnight, Julian experienced a gold rush as people from all over California hurried to the area for a chance to snag some gold. A year later, Julian had become a complete mining town, with a straw mill and a growing economy. The gold rush lasted for less than a decade, and was replaced by an apple harvest. James Madison brought over some apple trees during the gold rush, noticing over the years that they flourished in Julian’s crisp climate. Today, Julian’s famous apples bring in people from all over the world.
