San Diego truly has one of the most interesting topographies of any city in America. From the beaches to the … [...]

San Diego truly has one of the most interesting topographies of any city in America. From the beaches to the bays and wetlands to the mountains San Diego pretty much covers it all.

We’ve come up with a few suggestions on how and where to get some fabulous views of San Diego!
To start with, there is nothing quite like a drive on the 101 Highway, Scenic Drive, which weaves through San Diego from Oceanside down to La Jolla. A great starting point is Oceanside Harbor where you’ll find some delightful shops and restaurants. From there just head south on 101, or coast highway, and get ready for one of the most beautiful rides in the country!

Once you’ve reach La Jolla it’s just a short ride up to one of San Diego’s more recognizable landmarks, Mt. Soledad.
A peaceful oasis, Mt. Soledad is a serene spot with breathtaking views of San Diego and the coastline. Located between La Jolla and Pacific Beach, Mt. Soledad has attracted hikers, cyclists, and those in search of the ideal view for decades.

Atop the 822 foot mountain stands a 29-foot tall cross, the Veterans Memorial, that has made the mountain famous. More than 2,400 black granite plaques surround the cross, displaying photos, names and stories of American servicemen and women. The memorial was originally a tribute to Korean War veterans and it now honors veterans from other foreign wars and conflicts.

Mt. Soledad is a popular cycling destination with numerous routes. Enjoy Soledad bike tours with La Jolla Kayak, San Diego Bike and Kayak and Hike Bike Kayak. Your tour begins under the Mt. Soledad cross taking in a breathtaking view from Orange County to downtown San Diego. Your tour continues down the mountain past some of the most expensive real estate in the world and on to La Jolla’s famous coastline. You will have a chance to stop and appreciate the amazing scenery along the way. The tour is an easy ride, mostly downhill and suitable for riders of all skill levels. If you prefer to explore La Jolla on your own, they can supply you with everything you’ll need including bike, helmet and maps. La Jolla Kayak may be reached at (858) 459-1114, or visit their website at www.lajollakayak.com. To schedule your tour with Hike Bike Kayak call (858) 551-9510, or visit www.hikebikekayak.com. San Diego Bike And Kayak can be reached at (858) 454-1010 or visit their site at www.sandiegobikeandkayaktours.com.

If that isn’t enough activity for one day you can always head over to the Torrey Pines Gliderport.

What more could you ask for then experiencing the adrenaline and the exhilaration of gliding over beautiful sunny San Diego with the salty fresh wind at your face? Whether you’re overcoming your fear of heights, or just want to endure a new enthralling sport, paragliding is the perfect opportunity for you to achieve this. The Torrey Pines Gliderport is well known for providing thrill-seekers with the equipment and the preparation necessary to enjoy this fun-filled sport. All you need is a little motivation and you will be reaching new heights in no time. The Gliderport is located off of North Torrey Pines Road across from UCSD. Give them a call at (858) 452-9858 or visit their website at www.flytorrey.com.

Now it’s time to hop in a motorized flying machine to really get your heart pumping! There’s nothing like flying high in the sky across the most beautiful land in America. Get a bird’s eye view in a helicopter or airplane. Skim along the coastline and view the attractions of Sunset Cliffs, La Jolla, Mission Bay, Sea World, and Belmont Park, like never before. Soar above San Diego’s beautiful landscape and wide variety of attractions. You can spy on dolphins leaping in the ocean, children frolicking on the beaches, and the animals at the world famous San Diego Zoo. Swoop past the arching Coronado Island Bay Bridge, and the cliffs jutting into the sea in La Jolla.

Ascend above the architectural beauty of the San Diego skyline with Corporate Helicopters. Since 1989, they’ve been providing a variety of tours and charters through San Diego County and Mexico. With everything from quick jaunts, to full day adventures, you’ll be left in breathless awe. They can be reached at (800) 345-6737 or check them out online at www.corporatehelicopters.com.

For something just as exhilarating we’d like to suggest Barnstorming Adventures or Air 2 Air. At Air 2 Air you can put together your group of four or five people and take a “Sky Tour” of the San Diego area. Try the 30 minute tour and you’ll see most of San Diego’s best sights. Departing from Carlsbad/Palomar Airport, you’ll cover almost a hundred miles over the ground and view San Diego’s beauty from above. Give Air 2 Air a call at (760) 603- 6774 or visit them at www.air2aircorp.net. At Barnstorming Adventures they put the controls in your hands, literally! Take charge in the you fly-it air combat with the help of real fighter pilots. Glide gently like a bird, or dive, loop, and roll like a roller coaster; the choice is yours. With a variety of plane styles to choose from, you’ll never forget this adventure. For an unforgettable evening, try the Sunset Special Fly/Dine. They’ll fly you up along the coast and then you’ll take a short ride over to the Park Hyatt Aviara for a scrumptious dinner. Watch a beautiful sunset as you glide over sand and surf in the cockpit of a 1920s biplane. Barnstorming Adventures can be reached at (800) SKY-LOOP or go their website at www.barnstorming.com.

Let’s get our feet back firmly on terra firma and head over to Mission Trails Regional Park. The park encompasses nearly 5,800 acres of both natural and developed recreational acres. Its rugged hills, valleys and open areas represent a San Diego prior to the landing of Cabrillo in San Diego Bay in 1542.
Centrally located and only eight miles northeast of downtown San Diego, Mission Trails Regional Park provides a quick, natural escape from the urban hustle and bustle.

Mission Trails Regional Park has been called the third Jewel in the City of San Diego Park System. Along with Balboa Park and Mission Bay, it provides San Diego residents and visitors a way to explore the cultural, historical, and recreational aspects of San Diego.
Started in 1974, Mission Trails Regional Park has become one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Originally used by the Kumeyaay, the park is the site of the Old Mission Dam, built to store water for the Mission San Diego de Alcala.

With over 40 miles of trails, boating on Lake Murray, camping at Kumeyaay Lake, numerous informative hikes, and a state-of-the-art Visitor & Interpretive Center, Mission Trails Regional Park has something to offer everyone. You can get further information on the park by visiting www.mtrp.org or they can be reached at (619) 668-3281.

Well, I’m beat! That’s enough heart pumping, adrenaline rushing activities to last me for a while. We’ll see you in a few months!
