At The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum, the primary purpose is to preserve the history of Marine Corps aviation. The museum tells the story of Marine Corps aviators and ground crews who flew and maintained the aircraft. U.S. Marines have been called many things in the past 235 years, but one of the most recognized names is ‘Leathernecks’. They have owned the name since the days they were assigned to Navy tall ships and their uniforms had leather collars to prevent neck injuries from sword slashing. Enjoy and admire nearly 30 vintage aircraft, numerous artifacts that date back to the earliest days of the Corps, and an amazing trophy display. The museum entrance is located on Miramar Road, approximately 1 mile west of I-15, and is easily identified by the American and Marine Corps flags flying over the entrance. Open 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

T-4203 Anderson Avenue | (877) FLY-USMC | www.flyingleathernecks.org.

Directions: The museum is located directly across the street from 8604 Miramar Road. From I-15, proceed west for 1.3 miles and turn left into the parking lot. From I-805, proceed east for 3.9 miles and turn right into the parking lot. Look for the American flag and Marine Corps flag on the fence.

Fleet Science Center for the first time since its departure in 2009. Guests of all ages can follow in the inventive footsteps of Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and Leonardo da Vinci in the hands-on workshop area set to open in December 2011.

In the new and improved “Tinkering Studio” visitors can work together experimenting and collaborating on creative activities designed to spark curiosity and foster exploration. Make origami and Spirograph artwork, design and construct simple mechanical toys from recycled materials, build marble “roller coasters” using tubes and ramps, or create “digital bling” using colorful LED lights, batteries and accessories. These are just a few examples of the activities visitors will find in the “Tinkering Studio.”
