Mission Valley was the site of the first Spanish settlement in California, established in 1769 and is home to Mission San Diego de Alcala, which is the oldest of the California missions. Today Mission Valley is a major commercial center lining the San Diego River and is home to several shopping centers, Qualcomm Stadium (home of the San Diego Chargers).
In the late 1700s, Spanish explorers established missions throughout Southern California in an effort to bring livestock, fruits, vegetables, flowers and industry into California.
