Yankee Jim Ghost Yard
El Campo Santo Cemetery is the oldest burial ground in San Diego. It is home to the remains of nearly 500 bodies, including infamous thief, “Yankee Jim” Robinson who was hung a mere two blocks away.
Constructed in 1849, the cemetery was meant to be the final resting place for San Diego’s original pioneering families, but as many as 18 graves were paved over in 1889 remaining under the foundation of today’s San Diego Avenue.
Many pedestrians and drivers unknowingly travel over these nameless tombs. Visitors who attempt to adventure the sacred grounds can feel icy chills when walking near particular graves. In the evening, vigilant eyes can catch glimpses of misty figures dressed in period costume floating though the graveyard. This legendary signature of historic Old Town is sure to spook guests of all ages and satisfy their appetite for the supernatural. Mass Transit bus route #11.
