Annual Memorial Day Flower Drop

What better way to celebrate Memorial Day than with the Palm Springs Air Museum, as the Museum is home to one of the world’s largest collections of flyable WWII aircraft! A brief Memorial service dedicated to all who paid the ultimate price for our freedom is highlighted by a B-25 Mitchell bomber fly-by that drops 3,000 red and white carnations on our tarmac. These thousands of white and red carnations represent those who sacrificed their lives for our country.

Free Outdoor Movie Nights at Whitewater Park in Rancho Mirage!

In conjunction with the year-long 40th Anniversary celebrations presented by the City of Rancho Mirage, a series of free outdoor movie nights will be presented at Whitewater Park in Rancho Mirage.  Whitewater Park is located at 71560 San Jacinto Drive in Rancho Mirage, directly north of the Elephant Car Wash adjacent to the Whitewater Wash.

The big screen under the stars series will feature classic American movies starring many of the celebrities that lived, played, and shaped Rancho Mirage such as the Marx brothers, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.  Each of the five nights of the series will be hosted by a City Council Member and surprise celebrity guests.

Guests at these free screenings are encouraged to bring blankets, picnic baskets and their own libations to enjoy before and during the shows.  Popcorn and soft drinks will be the only refreshments available for patrons to purchase at the Movie Nights.  Free valet parking will be provided for easy access to the park for guests with lawn chairs and picnic baskets.  Arrival at the Park at 7:00 pm is recommended to ensure enough time for an enjoyable picnic dinner prior to the show time commencing at 8:00 pm.

Founded in 2000 by the late mystery author and Palm Springs community leader Arthur Lyons, this unique festival features an eclectic mixture of landmark and obscure vintage movies from the classic film noir era. Laden with period post war cynicism, these glorious black and white films are laden with suspense, sexuality and crime portrayed from the perspective of the criminals.

Writer and Film Noir Foundation director Alan K. Rode, who is producing and hosting the festival for the sixth consecutive year, promises another fun-filled weekend of classic noir enlivened by special guest star appearances and introductions by noted film historians.

The mysteriously enchanting Salton Sea at the La Quinta Museum

La Quinta Museum presents the new summer exhibit opening Friday, May 17: The Mysteriously Enchanting Salton Sea, an exhibit of the attraction of the Salton Sea. The Sea became a haven for boating, water skiing, fishing, camping, hiking, and bird watching back in the 1950s and 60s!

So where did the Salton Sea get its “mysteriously enchanting” reputation? The movie industry saw the Sea as a prime location to film pictures and real estate entrepreneurs promoted the Sea as a place that was “mysteriously enchanting and teeming with adventure”.

With over 500,000 visitors per year in its prime, the Salton Sea offered marinas, championship golf courses, shopping centers, a private airstrip, and luxury resort hotels. By the mid-1960s, park attendance rivaled that of Yosemite National Park. Photographs and interview excerpts of current Salton Sea residents and visitors from Christina Lange’s new book, “Portraits and Voices fo the Salton Sea,” will offer a wider perspective on its history as well as a glimpse into its present existence.
